Last fall, I started the process of applying for a Volunteer position at the New England Aquarium. I was wait listed, as these positions are hard to come by. After submitting my application, I was interviewed over the phone, and then in person. Then, more waiting.
Yesterday, I was contacted to come in for a final meeting and specific placement into the Penguin Colony. I am super amped and more than ready.
Pico and Gallo, a mating pair.
Taking this position was important, because I want to go into Veterinary Medicine. I'd like to get some hands-on work with animals before I make the leap.
We are given wet suits, and stand in water that is pumped in from Boston Harbor. [pretty friggin cold...] We are expected to document behavior of, prepare food for, and feed the three species of Penguins on site. We even get to clean guano off of rocks. Score. But it's all worth it, because these animals are intelligent, spectacularly beautiful, and have enormous personalities.
I just hope I fit in.
