I was in the grocery store the other day, trying to find some chicken, and an old man walked by me with his shopping cart. He stopped, looked down at me in my motorized shopping 'scooter', and scoffed. He said to me, "You've got the whole cart there? I've only got this cane. And I've got arthritis in my knee." He gave me a dirty look.
I know we're supposed to be respectful to our elders.
I know that.
But when there's blatant disrespect, or general disregard for the the fact that just because a person is young, they may also be sick and in pain, I'm sorry Gramps... but ya get what ya give. Not the best of Flutter moments here, but I stuck up for myself. And I'm happy that I did.
People don't understand when you've got a disability, and I must have looked like some punk in a cool scooter-buggy. That's fine. But being open minded and respectful is something we learn in Kindergarten. Maybe a refresher is due somewhere near mid-life.
Did I mention that was at Market Basket??! 12 dirty looks and bullshit from an old man. I'll never go back... unless I need a good stick-up for-myself-sesh.
