Winter is coming, and I am excited to prepare for moving into our new place and buckling down on concrete plans for healing and illustration. Yucky weather makes for plenty of time inside to create new work. I have been feeling the need to draw for a cause.
I am starting to finalize decisions this week for some tee designs with Evan Webster and have actually been reading a lot about how the tee shirts made for our little girls by large companies have been disappointing the masses. There have been more than a few articles written in the last few months about how the messages printed on children's tees, as well as adult tees, have been downright offensive.
I found this article on Jezebel. The thought of how our little ones are being programmed to think made me shudder. When did it become 'cute' for our young girls to focus on anything other than 'playing'? I get it, walking around in Mommy's heels and holding her purse as a toddler is darling. But nearing the teen years, and entering them with notions that they are, 'Too Pretty To Do Homework' [as written on one JC Penney tee], is not only unrealistic, but is just another way to keep our young women down.
And we're allowing it.
I've always been a little different. The girls that I have surrounded myself with are strong, opinionated, intelligent, and don't take any shit. They work hard, understand the value of self respect, and if I have anything to do with it... so will the girls who wear my designs.
